How Much Skincare Product Do You Really Need?

The main questions I get asked as an esthetician are “What order do my products go in?” and “How much am I actually supposed to use?”
Both are understandable. You can invest in great skincare, have everything lined up on your counter, and still wonder what goes first and whether you’re using enough—or entirely too much.
The good news is, skincare doesn’t have to be complicated.
What Goes First?
Think of your routine in layers. Start with your cleanser, then move into lighter products like toners and serums, followed by eye cream and moisturizer. During the day, SPF should always be your final skincare step.
Your nighttime routine may look slightly different depending on the treatments you’re using, but the basic idea stays the same.
And you don’t need a shelf full of products to have a good routine. I would much rather see you consistently use a few products that are right for your skin than buy everything that’s currently trending.
How Much Should You Use?
This is where a lot of us are a little heavy-handed.
Take a look at the photo above. It gives you a good idea of how little product you actually need. A dime-to-nickel-sized amount of cleanser is usually plenty.
Serums may only require a few drops, and eye cream requires even less—about a grain-of-rice-sized amount per eye.
With moisturizer, you want enough to comfortably cover your face and neck without leaving a heavy layer sitting on the skin.
Masks need enough for an even layer, while exfoliators generally require much less than most people think.
Using twice as much doesn’t give you twice the results. Most of the time, it just means you’ll be replacing that expensive skincare twice as fast.
And although it isn’t pictured, I have to mention SPF. If we’re putting time and money into improving our skin, protecting those results is part of the routine.
Your Routine Should Make Sense for Your Skin
Skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all. What works beautifully for someone else may not be what your skin needs.
If you’re looking at your products wondering what goes where, what you actually need, or whether your current routine is helping your skin, that’s exactly what my Virtual Skin Consultation is designed for.
