Promises I Keep Breaking to Myself

3 min read

Is anyone else struggling to show up for themselves the way they show up for everyone else?

I've been thinking about something lately, and it's a little uncomfortable to admit.

The person I let down the most, unintentionally, is myself.

Not because I don't care about myself. Not because I don't have goals, dreams, or things I want to accomplish. It's actually quite the opposite.

I have so many things I want to do for ME.

I tell myself I'm going to get back into a routine. I'm going to be more consistent. I'm going to make time for my health, my peace, my goals, and the things that genuinely make me happy.

I start with good intentions. Sometimes I even start strong.

Then life happens.

Someone needs something. Another responsibility comes up. The day gets away from me. Before I know it, the promises I made to myself are the first things I push to tomorrow.

Funny how I can find the energy to show up for everyone else, even when I'm exhausted, but struggle to find that same energy for myself.

And that's the part I'm trying to change.

Learning to Put My Mask On First

You know how they tell you on an airplane to put your oxygen mask on before helping someone else?

I've heard that analogy a thousand times, but I'm realizing I haven't been living by it.

I'm so used to making sure everyone else is okay that I sometimes forget to check on myself.

Am I getting what I need? Am I making progress toward my own goals? Am I taking care of myself beyond just doing what needs to be done?

Or am I simply getting through another day?

I don't want to keep confusing being busy with being fulfilled.

I don't want my needs to always be negotiable while everyone else's are nonnegotiable.

Most importantly, I don't want to keep making promises to myself that I don't follow through on.

I Don't Need Another Fresh Start. I Need Consistency.

I think that's where I am in this season of my life.

I'm not looking for another Monday, another month, or another perfect opportunity to start over.

I'm looking for the motivation and discipline to keep going, especially when life gets busy.

To choose myself without feeling guilty.

To make my needs a priority without feeling like I'm neglecting someone else.

To understand that showing up for myself doesn't have to mean doing something big every single day.

Sometimes it's simply doing the one thing I told myself I would do.

Giving myself grace when I fall short, without using that grace as an excuse to keep putting myself last.

I want to become someone who can trust herself to follow through.

Because my goals matter. My health matters. My happiness matters. My peace matters.

I matter, too.

Maybe I'm Not the Only One

I'm sharing this because I can't imagine I'm the only person who feels this way.

Maybe you're the one everyone depends on. The one who figures things out, makes things happen, and somehow finds a way to keep everything moving.

But who's making sure you're okay?

Who's holding you accountable to the promises you've made to yourself?

I'm still figuring that part out.

I don't have some magical routine or motivational speech that's going to fix everything overnight. I'm just at a point where I recognize that something needs to change, and that change has to start with me.

So here's what I'm working on: keeping the promises I make to myself, even the small ones.

Not perfectly. Just more consistently.

Because I deserve the same love, effort, patience, and commitment that I so freely give to everyone else.

And so do you.

Let me ask you something: Are you struggling to keep promises to yourself, too? And if you've figured out how to stay consistent while juggling everything life throws at you, what's helping you?

I'd genuinely love to hear it because I'm still learning.

With love,
